Students in grades 5 – 8 have the option of joining band. There is no charge for lessons. Students get an individual lesson once a week and group band also meets once a week. Students need to provide their own instruments.
6th – 8th grade students are allowed to participate in Solo and Ensemble, an event where they prepare a piece of music and play it for a judge. St. Mary's Band also participates in Band Festival, where our whole group plays for a judge and is rated.
Students in 4K – 6th grade have general music two times weekly. Music follows a structured learning program which includes Concept Development, Listening Skills, Music Reading, Movement Skills and Performance Skills.
A few highlights include 4th grade students learning the recorder. They perform at the Christmas Program and Grandparents' Day.
Our 4K – 6th grade students perform at the Christmas Program every year and sing selected songs for Grandparent's Day. The students also rehearse for liturgy during music class.
St. Mary's Junior High Choir is composed of all students in grades 7 and 8. The choir meets twice a week.
The major emphasis of this group is learning vocal technique to prepare the choir for performing throughout the school year.
St. Mary's choir sings for the Veteran's Day Program in November, Christmas Concert, caroling at the Wausau Center in December, Catholic School's Week in February, Marawood Choir Festival in April, and the Home and School Meeting in May.
Students also have an opportunity to take part in the Marawood Solo-Ensemble contest in March.
The choir has consistently received first place ratings at festivals.
Forensics provides middle school students with the opportunity to build knowledge, confidence and interest in speaking as a life-long skill. It provides an individual or group competition in a variety of categories that includes declamation, reporting, poetry, storytelling, plays, demonstration and informative speeches. There are intramural and intermural competitions for students in grades 6 - 8.
