Is there anything truly unique about Saint Mary's Catholic School? As you walk through the school building and see the messages on the bulletin boards or hear the instruction inside the classrooms or smell the home-style cooking from the kitchen, you become aware that the faculty and staff of Saint Mary's care for the students and try to create a partnership with parents in the formation and education of their children. Like most Catholic grade schools, Saint Mary's offers a faith-based curriculum where Christian principles are taught and lived. One truly unique characteristic of Saint Mary's School revolves around the commitment of many parishioners with regard to the school. Hi, my name is Deacon Hilts. My family and I moved to Marathon nearly 25 years ago. We immediately felt welcomed and part of the community. Our two daughters attended St. Mary’s and both became teachers, one even taught here for a short time. Our daughters are both married and we have been blessed with five grandchildren. My wife and I live on a small farm south of town where we rotationally graze beef cattle. We are in the process of transitioning the farm to our daughter and son-in-law.
I have had a varied career path, having worked in banking, auditing, and most of my career in law enforcement, retiring from the Wausau Police Department. I was also a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve and Army Reserve. I had the opportunity to become a paratrooper.
I have been a lifelong Catholic and attend Loyola University of Chicago where I met my wife, Michelle. I was ordained a Deacon in 2012 and have been assigned to St. Mary’s ever since. I recently served as the Director of the Office for the Diaconate for the Diocese of La Crosse. I am excited to be able to focus my energy here at St. Mary’s School where we are all STRIVING FOR SAINTHOOD.
